POMINI Long Rolling Mills upgrades a rolling mill in Kazakhstan
POMINI Long Rolling Mills received a contract by the metallurgical company QARMET JSC for the upgrade of the rolling mill located in Temirtau, in the Kazakh region of Karaganda.
Sold and installed in the early 2000s by Siemens VAI, predecessor of POMINI Long Rolling Mills, the rolling mill has since been producing some 400,000 tons per year of merchant bars, including rebars, rounds, squares, flats, angles, channels, and tees. While the original rolling train comprised sixteen rolling Red Ring stands for processing square billets with a side dimension of 130 mm, the continuous casting machine in the upward steelworks has been recently modified and it is now capable of casting 150 mm billets as well.
This leads to the requirement of adding two more Red Ring stands to the roughing train, so to accommodate the larger billet. The use of a larger billet will be beneficial to the yield and efficiency of operation.
The two new Red Ring stands will be the same as the original ones, for a better compatibility of spare components. The main mechanical scope of the project also includes two sets of rolling guides, stand-by equipment, and lubrication components.
The main electric scope includes the upgrading of Medium Voltage panel, an additional MV/LV transformer, the main drives and motors for the new stands. The existing L1 automation will be completed with the hardware and software related to the new stands: sensors, instrumentation, field devices, control functions, and video pages for the existing HMI system. Moreover, a new complete L2 system will be developed and implemented for the entire rolling mill.
Advisory services will be provided for the erection and commissioning of the upgraded mill, whose startup is planned during the second half of 2027.
