Hyundai Steel awards to POMINI Long Rolling Mills a contract for a new PQS quenching system

POMINI Long Rolling Mills was awarded a contract from Hyundai Steel Company for a new quenching-tempering system PQS (Pomini Quenching System), in replacement of the existing Tempcore system at Pohang (South Korea) plant.

It is the fourth project of POMINI Long Rolling Mills for Hyundai Steel.

The thermo-processing system PQS will improve the efficiency of the existing production, as well as better process the steel grades required by the market, in full compliance with the current standards for high-performance rebars. The PQS process controls the distribution of microstructures like martensite, bainite and perlite across the bar section, in order to obtain the required mechanical parameters such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation. The process eliminates the need to add costly alloying elements like Vanadium in the meltshop.

The PQS will process rebars with diameters ranging from 16 to 51 mm, with 16 to 22 being 2-slit rolled. The mill has a yearly production capacity of 800,000 metric tons and rolls rebars with diameter up to 57 mm, as well as plain round bars with diameters from 20 to 85 mm.

The main mechanical equipment will feature the PQS pipes, the boosting pump system, and other engineering services. The electrical and automation supply will include the main and auxiliary drives and motors, the automation level 1 and interface with existing level 2. POMINI Long Rolling Mills will also provide advisory services for erection, commissioning and training.

The startup is planned in late 2025.

Established in 1953, Hyundai Steel Co., Ltd is the oldest South Korean's steelmaker. Headquartered in Incheon (South Korea) and a member of the Hyundai Motor Group, it operates several sites in South Korea (Incheon, Dangjin, Pohang, Suncheon) and overseas, with a global yearly production capacity of approximately 12 million metric tons. It manufactures a wide variety of products ranging from H-beams, rail and reinforcing bars, to hot coil, cold-rolled steel, and stainless cold-rolled sheet.
